Air Conditioning FAQ

What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need for My Home?

The only way to size a furnace or air conditioner for your home is to do a heat load calculation. The capacity needed is based upon how quickly your home gains or loses heat, not by square footage alone.

After my air conditioner runs for a while, ice forms on the big pipe outside and it stops cooling. What could be the problem?

More than likely, it’s either low on refrigerant or low on airflow. As a homeowner, replace your filter and allow the unit to thaw. If the problem reoccurs, call American Home Services to schedule service on your system. We recommend having annual maintenance tune-up performed to keep your system in peak operating condition. Ask your American Home Services representative about our maintenance tune-up agreement program.

How Often Should Our Heating and Cooling Units Be Checked?

Two times a year. Have your heating and cooling system professionally checked each spring and fall to ensure maximum safe performance, maximum energy efficiency, and maximum equipment life. You will be surprised how inexpensive this service is!

Should I Close off Vents When a Room Is Not Being Used?

No. Do not block off or close any air vents completely. Your system was designed for a certain amount of air flow and will not function as well as possible if improperly modified.

Can Shrubs or Flowers Be Planted Around an Outdoor Unit?

Yes. However, we recommend that plants be no closer than 18 inches from the unit. This allows for plenty of room for air circulation in and out of the unit. Without this room for air circulation, the unit could overheat, resulting in a premature need for service.

When Should I Change My Filters?

Replace your air filter frequently. Under normal conditions, a 1″ filter should be replaced monthly and a 4″ filter should be replaced every 6 months.
